SALISBURY PLAIN ADVANCED MOTORISTS

Motorcycling Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions answered

After I have paid the Skill for Life fee is there any thing else to pay?

Your Observer gives his time and the use of his bike for FREE so we request that you give your Observer £5 each ride out towards the fuel. If you stop at a café you can have the privilege of buying the tea/coffee.

How does the Better Riding Course work?

After the theory evening there is a ride out, which subject to operational requirements is supervised by the Wiltshire Motor Cycle Traffic Police. They will demonstrate how to ride to the ?road craft? standard as well as giving you a friendly debrief on how your ride differs from the standard. You will then be allocated your own personal Observer. Who will arrange ride outs with you at mutually convenient times.

How often do ride outs take place?

Normally weekly, but they are arranged to suit you and your Observer.

How far do we go on the ride outs?

Each Observer has his own pet routes which highlight different points of the standard. These will vary in length from forty to one hundred miles. Ride out distance also varies according to the time both of you have available.

How many rides will I need?

Everyone is different. If you use your machine every day and practise the IAM advanced riding system diligently then it may be possible to take the test after a couple of rides. Equally if you only use your bike now and again the chances are it could take many more. Most riders will take about eight or more rides.

What happens when I am ready for the test?

When your Observer decides you are test ready he will arrange for you to have a pre-test assessment with a Senior Observer. This checks that your Observer has not missed anything. All being well it is test time with the IAM examiner!

Can I extend my riding skills beyond the Advanced Test?

If you want to develop your riding skills further, you could become a Group Observer. Becoming an Observer requires you to undergo training with Senior Observers of the Salisbury Plain Advanced Motorists group, take an Observer’s theory test, together with a riding skills assessment.
